Magic: The Gathering – Der Hobbit Set 2026: Release and Information

Magic: The Gathering – Der Hobbit Set 2026: Release und Infos

Magic: The Gathering travels to Middle-earth again in 2026. After the great success of Der Herr der Ringe: Geschichten aus Mittelerde, the next big Universes Beyond set from Tolkien's world follows with Magic: The Gathering | Der Hobbit. This time, the focus is not on the War of the Ring but on Bilbo Baggins' great journey: from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain.

The new MTG Der Hobbit Set combines well-known scenes from the fantasy classic with Magic cards, special collectors' variants, and an extensive product range. Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, Smaug, the Arkenstone, and the riddles in the dark are already among the motifs that shape the set.

There is now a lot of official information about Magic: The Gathering | Der Hobbit. Therefore, this is not a pure speculation article but a current overview of the Release, Prerelease, legality, known cards, Booster fun highlights, products, and preorders.

From the Shire to the Lonely Mountain: This is Magic: The Gathering | Der Hobbit

Magic: The Gathering | Der Hobbit takes players and collectors on Bilbo's famous journey. It all begins in the Shire, where Bilbo Baggins actually wants to live a quiet life. But with Gandalf and the company of dwarves, everything changes. From a cozy hobbit, he becomes an unexpected adventurer who outwits trolls, meets elves, solves riddles, and finally comes closer to the dragon Smaug.

This journey is the big difference from the earlier Lord of the Rings set. While Der Herr der Ringe: Geschichten aus Mittelerde told the epic story of the War of the Ring, Der Hobbit feels more personal, fairy-tale-like, and adventurous. The focus is on friendship, courage, cunning, treasures, songs, dwarves, and of course the dragon beneath the mountain.

For Magic, this is a strong foundation. The set offers iconic characters, familiar locations, and many motifs that are perfect for special cards, artifacts, lands, scene cards, and collectors' treatments.

Release and Prerelease at a glance

The official Magic The Gathering The Hobbit Release Date is August 14, 2026. The Prerelease Events start on August 7, 2026 and run until August 13, 2026. Anyone wanting to get into the set as early as possible should pay special attention to the Prerelease period.

As an official WPN Store, cardcosmos already ships Magic products at the Prerelease date. Your order can therefore be on its way before the official Release.

Bilbo, Smaug, and the Arkenstone: These motifs are already known

A complete card list has not yet been released, but Wizards of the Coast has already revealed several cards and motifs. This already makes it clear which scenes and characters will be especially important for Magic: The Gathering | Der Hobbit.

An Unexpected Party

An Unexpected Party captures the beginning of Bilbo's adventure. Gandalf and the dwarves show up at Bilbo's, turning a quiet evening into the start of a journey that leads him to the Lonely Mountain. The card is not only part of the set but also appears as a Promo Card in Magic Presents: Heart of the Mountain, while supplies last.

Bilbo, Luckwearer

Bilbo, Luckwearer was shown as a Promo Card for Commander Party Events. The name fits Bilbo's role in the story perfectly: he is not a classic hero but always in the right place at the right time. This card should be particularly interesting for Commander players and Tolkien fans.

Smaug the Magnificent

The main highlight of the set is Smaug the Magnificent. Smaug is not only one of the most famous dragons in fantasy literature but also the perfect motif for a special Magic card. Especially exciting is the rare Gleaming Gold version, which can only be found in Collector Boosters.

Thorin, Mountain-king and The Arkenstone

With Thorin, Mountain-king and The Arkenstone, two more central motifs have been confirmed. Thorin represents the dwarves' claim to the Lonely Mountain. The Arkenstone is one of the most important artifacts in the story and fits perfectly into a set so strongly shaped by treasures, heritage, and dragon hoards.

My Precious

Bilbo's encounter with Gollum also plays a role. Cards like My Precious capture one of the most important scenes from The Hobbit. The riddles in the dark connect Bilbo's adventure directly with the later events from Der Herr der Ringe.

Smaug's Treasure: The Biggest Collectors Highlights of the Set

When talking about Magic: The Gathering | Der Hobbit, you can't avoid Smaug and his treasure. This motif runs through many of the special card variants. The set offers several booster fun treatments that are especially interesting for collectors.

Gleaming Gold Smaug the Magnificent

Probably the most sought-after card in the set is Smaug the Magnificent as a Gleaming Gold Headliner. This version features a special gold-gloss Foil treatment and is thematically directly inspired by Smaug's massive hoard beneath the Lonely Mountain.

This card appears exclusively in Collector Boosters. It can be included in Collector Boosters of any language but is always in English itself. Due to the very limited quantity, this Smaug variant is likely to become one of the most important chase highlights of MTG Der Hobbit.

Dragon Hoard Frame Cards

The Dragon Hoard Frame Cards are also directly inspired by Smaug and his treasure. They feature a special card frame that incorporates gold, dragon motifs, and the hoard beneath the mountain.

There are a total of 25 Dragon Hoard Frame Cards. Non-Foil and traditional Foil versions appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. Surge Foil versions are exclusively included in Collector Boosters.

Dwarven Language Cards

A special highlight for Tolkien fans are the Dwarven Language Cards. Wizards brings five popular Magic cards in a Dwarvish language variant. These cards depict scenes from Der Hobbit and always appear in the Dwarvish language.

Dwarven Language Cards are only available in Collector Boosters. They can appear as Non-Foil or traditional Foil cards.

Book Cover Cards

The Book Cover Cards visually resemble classic fantasy novels. These borderless cards have a special style inspired by book covers and old editions of Der Hobbit. There are a total of ten cards in this treatment.

Well-known examples include Thorin, Mountain-king and The Arkenstone. Non-Foil and traditional Foil versions appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. Surge Foil versions are only available in Collector Boosters.

Middle-earth Classic Artist Cards as Box Toppers

With the Middle-earth Classic Artist Cards, Wizards connects the new Hobbit set with the earlier Lord of the Rings set. In total, 40 borderless cards appear, originally from Der Herr der Ringe: Geschichten aus Mittelerde and featuring new artworks by well-known fantasy artists.

Each Play Booster Display and each Collector Booster Display contains a Box Topper with a traditional Foil Middle-earth Classic Artist Card. Additionally, non-Foil and Surge-Foil versions of these cards can appear in Collector Boosters.

The Shire on cards: Special lands in MTG Der Hobbit

Besides legendary characters and special collector cards, the lands also play an important role. Magic: The Gathering | Der Hobbit brings two special land treatments that focus on Bilbo's journey and the Shire.

Middle-earth Journey Basic Lands

The Middle-earth Journey Basic Lands show landscapes from Bilbo's journey through Middle-earth. These full-art standard lands visually accompany the path from the Shire towards the Lonely Mountain.

Non-Foil and traditional Foil versions appear in Play Boosters. Each Collector Booster also contains a traditional Foil Middle-earth Journey Basic Land.

Seasonal Hobbit Basic Lands

The Seasonal Hobbit Basic Lands show the Shire in different seasons. These are four different full-art lands with seasonal motifs.

These countries appear in Prerelease packs, Bundles, and Gift Bundles. Prerelease packs contain non-Foil versions, Bundles contain traditional Foil versions, and Gift Bundles contain Surge-Foil versions.
